It is a book that opens your eyes to what is going on in the middle east. It really is a tangled web. This novel was intriguing and exciting. The narrator did an excellent job with the characters. Mark Royce and his friends were quite interesting. I'm looking forward to the next in the series.
Aug 27, Rob Trans rated it liked it. This is a decent enough quick read suitable for travel or a vacation. It moves along and kept my interest. The main characters were fairly detailed, but a little stereotypical not a bad thing in a book like this. If the scene descriptions are accurate, then they are educational and an asset to the story. The story is to find three Americans who disappeared in Iraq and bring them home alive.

At the end of the day, both of the main characters become heroes. There is a strong undercurrent of Christianity in the story, both from the perspective of several major characters and the politics of Iraq. I'd read more of these, but there are other books I'll read first. Jun 30, Tracy rated it liked it Shelves: popsugar-reading-challenge. A Christian espionage thriller. My first one. Wasn't sure what to expect.
So, the first half of the book went a bit slowly for me, and I found myself floundering around a bit in the number of characters. The second half picked up pace and content quite significantly, and I really enjoyed it. I sort of have a love-hate relationship with Christian fiction. I love that they are generally clean reads no language or sex , and I even love some of the religion aspects of it. But I really don't like wh A Christian espionage thriller. But I really don't like when books become preachy.
With a Little Help from My Friends - Wikipedia
This book didn't go there, so there was no reason to dislike it; I really liked that the aspects of personal religion in the book were very personal and not preachy. I also really loved the book's setting in Iraq; it's outside of my usual reading range, and it was eye-opening and fun. Well written and the central plot is interesting enough to keep you, er, interested, but around three quarters of the way through I felt it lost its way a bit before then getting back on track again.
I felt the description of Baghdad was very good and detailed, as were the bits of Iraqi history described as well. One big gripe was the name of the main character. May 13, W. Lattimore rated it it was amazing. I struggled for a moment, considering whether to rate this with 4 or 5 stars. In the end, because this author went through so much research to pull this off, it tipped the scale upward. I enjoyed being taken on a journey into the inner reaches of Iraq, where there is a combination of chaos and a "new normal" for those who live in that nation.
Outside of that, the intrigue an I struggled for a moment, considering whether to rate this with 4 or 5 stars. Outside of that, the intrigue and the push through danger and cultural differences made this a compelling read. I very much recommend this work of Bunn's. Jun 12, Nathan rated it really liked it. More than just a run of the mill Christian fiction novel, Bunn paints a nuanced picture of the underlying diplomacy behind both religious and political tensions in Iraq.
There were definitely parts I wished the author had added a little depth though. Certain characters and situations didn't really develop as much as they could have. Still, it left me with sense of anticipation. Will de More than just a run of the mill Christian fiction novel, Bunn paints a nuanced picture of the underlying diplomacy behind both religious and political tensions in Iraq. Davis Bunn was recommended to me from a friend. Marc Royce is an interesting individual, who is struggling through the loss of his wife, while immersing himself into a very dangerous setting Bagdad , to find an American friend who was kidnapped. He finds unexpected friendship with a Christian family I was hooked after the first chapter!
Feb 26, Vicki Morris rated it liked it. You get the sense that the writer really knows what he is writing about. There are a lot of interesting ideas presented in the book that beg for discussion.
The book would really lend itself well for book club. I was a bit disappointed with the ending. I would have liked to have seen what happened to the rescued characters and more about Marc, finding a purpose or calling Feb 09, Dave Hoff rated it liked it.
